Even though tooth enamel is considered the strongest substance in the human body, even stronger than our bones, we can still put our smiles at risk and the enamel can eventually break.
There are many things that can cause a broken tooth, including:
• Chewing on hard objects or foods, like nuts, hard candy, and ice
• Experiencing an oral accident or injury, like a blow to the mouth
• Clenching and grinding your teeth
• Having an uneven chewing pressure, whether it’s because of dental or orthodontic work
• Putting stress on a tooth
• Losing a significant portion of the tooth structure because of dental restorations
• Exposing the tooth enamel to temperature extremes, like eating hot food and then quickly drinking ice cold water
• Having brittle teeth that have undergone root canal therapy
Now, because broken or chipped teeth are common in the world today, there are multiple restorations and cosmetic treatments that can help you fix your injured tooth, like dental fillings, dental bonding, dental crowns, dental veneers, and root canal therapy. Depending on the severity of the crack or break, we will offer the best treatment that will fix your tooth and give you the strong and successful oral health you deserve.
It is very important that you see your dentist right away if you have cracked or broken your tooth. However, sometimes that is not possible. So, until you see your dentist, we recommend doing the following things:
• Take an over-the-counter pain medication and rinse your mouth with salt water to relieve the pain.
• Cover the tooth with a piece of wax or sugar-free gum to keep the tooth from cutting your tongue, lip, or cheek.
• If you must eat, make sure you avoid biting down on the broken tooth by chewing on the opposite side of your mouth.
